stuttering mouse (9 posts)

Folks,
My mouse and keyboard both stutter(lol). Meaning if I say drag the scrollbar it stutters along behind the arrow or if I type a letter (like now)the letter appears a short time after striking the key.
Any thoughts?
Mike.

Re: stuttering mouse

Mike,

What type of Mouse? If it is a ball type- check and clean the rollers that contact the ball. Also, if it's a MS Mouse there is Mouse 5 available at MS Downloads. I was having trouble with my optical mouse in Office 2003 until I installed Mouse 5.

It could also be a reflection on a number of other possibilities such as your video card settings - Refresh rate amongst others.

I would investigate these options and see if changes to various parameters correct the problem. I upped my refresh rate to about 75Hz and it got rid of the apparent flicker that I had.

Hope this helps.

Re: stuttering mouse

Tracy,
Thanks for replying. My ISP reckons I have something running only while I,m on the net. But as a computer newbie i havent a clue how to find out. Maybe you can help in this regard. Regards,

Mike. PS: It has taken forever to type this as the letters appear a couple of seconds after I press the key. LOL

Re: stuttering mouse

Mike,

Aha!!

First- Do you have an up-to-date anti-virus (AV) program? If NOT- get one.

Second- It could be Spyware (a program/file that sends information about you to another person without you realising it).

Three- I believe the PCW CD's have a program called AdAware on them- I haven't really looked at mine. Install and run this program. It is very good at finding and allowing you to delete any Spyware that it finds. A word of warning- This program is like an AV program and must be kept updated on a regular basis- about once a month.

Four- Run your AV program and ensure that your computer is virus free.

Five- Install a Firewall program. Zonealarm is free for home use and is available quite easily. Once set up properly this will assist in keeping out spyware and other nasties. (also needs to be updated on a regular basis).

All these things that I have touched on are what I see as basic tools to stop unauthorised access to your system and and virus attacks. People may recommend other programs but in the end all combinations will basically achieve the same result- It often comes down to personal choice and comfort when using the programs.

As a final thought- I also use Webroots's Window Washer that can be programmed to clean out all your unnecessary junk files on a regular basis. I run Xp and Office 2003 and regularly remove 20-30Mb daily.

Hope all this helps you overcome your problems.

Re: stuttering mouse

Hi Mike, I don't know if I am reading this right but I think you are saying the problem only occurs when you are on-line. You could be victim of a browser hijack. Has your homepage changed to something that you didn't select?

The problem you describe can be a symptom of the Cool Web Search hijack (amongst others). If this is the case download CWSchredder at the following site: http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html CWS will remove that particular hijack.

You could also have been infected by the Welchi virus (I think that's How it's spelt). Are you getting a lot of disk activity and is your modem going crazy when you are online? If so it could be that - make sure your anti virus program is up to date.

Re: stuttering mouse

It certainly sounds like one or more applications running in the background, in which case you should expect your whole system to appear slow.

To see what is running use Ctrl-Alt-Del. Depening on the version of Windows this will either bring up the task list. From here you can left click on each task and use End Task (it may take a while to close and you may get another prompt asking if you want to end the task now).

Leave Explorer and SysTray running. Now open Windows Explorer and see if it is any better. If so, restart and do the same thing but only close one task. Test and repeat if not cured. If not, then it is something else, maybe a task which does not show up, in which case try using AdAware and/or Spybot to look for malware.

Sorry I took so long replying.

Hi durden

I have the ACER aspire 4820T that comes with bluetooth inbuilt. I have the Microsoft bluetooth mouse 5000. I have always been using it with no problems. Suddenly it stopped working.

As usual, I thought I can just re-installing it by using the pairing function under the bluetooth panel "Add a device". Best part is the wizard just keeps going and never stops. My mouse is already in pairing mode.

Next check under devices/printers and believe it or not, it appears as indicated. However under the bluetooth control panel (Show Bluetooth devices), no mouse. In the devices & printers panel, the mouse shows up.

I cannot use the mouse or do a manual installation.

I have also tried to upgrade the drivers for the bluetooth and still not working. Tried the mouse with another computer and no problem. Can anybody advise how to do a reset of the bluetooth module or settings?

Short of a complete reinstallation of win 7 (which I hope to avoid just for one mouse), I have run out of ideas.

Hope somebody can render any insight as to how to resolve the issue.

Durden, did you contact Acer support about this? I tried to but they just blame the mouse and software? Any luck on your side?

Thanks for reading.
