FIle sharing (3 posts)

Hi

I have connected to PC's using a crossover cable, one is running wXP and the other w98. The w98 PC has no option in the shortcut menu (by right clicking a directory or file) for sharing a file. Also w98 pc is not recognising the installed network card and the w98 installation disk is not finding a suitable driver. Why is there no option for sharing a file and how can I connect them so they are 'talking'? Do they have to be of the same workgroup?

Thanks

Re: FIle sharing

The first thing you're going to have to do to get anywhere is find a driver for the network card, or get another network card and matching driver. They are dirt cheap. $20.

Re: FIle sharing

  1. If you can identify your NIC in the win98 machine, download the driver from the manufacturer's website.

  2. In WIN98 you have to enable file & print sharing. Go to Control panel, select Network, click "add" select "service" select File & Printer sharing. You will need to restart computer.

  3. Yes they need to be in same workgroup to share information and if you intend to use Internet Connection Sharing you will need to make sure they are in same workgroup. Win XP machine by default chooses MSHOME but you can change this to your choice as long as it meets networking convention eg freddo freddo16 freddo_16 are all legalv freddo//16 is not legal.
