DirectX or Direct3D Problems - Can't run 3D Games (6 posts)

To Helpscreen.

I am having heaps of trouble running any of my 3D games anymore. They have all worked in the past and this has never happened to me. I have an Intel i740 8mb video card and am using DirectX 8.0. I am running Windows 98' on a P2 350mhz with 128Mb RAM. These are some of the errors I am getting... they are always with KERNEL32.dll and GFXDD32.dll (I think thats what its called).

UNREALTOURNAMENT caused an invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.DLL at 015f:bff8abea.

or something like this...

QUAKE3 caused an invalid page fault in module GFXDD32.DLL at 015f:bff8abea.

Note that this problem never happens with my 2D style games such as Star Trek: Away team or Age of Empires 2. Other games that dont work are Counter-Strike, Half-Life, FIFA 2000, GTA 2 and World War 2 fighters. The message GTA2 gives me is

"Unable to find a suitable Graphics Driver."

The message World War II Fighters gives me is

"DirectDraw: Unable to load memory buffers."

All of the above games have worked in the past. I only have 2 DOS games on my computer but they have never caused problems with otehr games in the past. The DOS games I run are Doom and Triplane Turmoil. The only thing I remember installing on my system before things started to go wrong was a demo of Microsoft's Crimson Skies. But I have installed that before and it never did anything wrong then. Things I have tried to do to fix it are re-installing the same graphics drivers I have (they have always worked) called Intel740 Win9x PV4.0 with Video Capture. I have also tried to re-install DirectX 8.0, and i'm not sure if I was using 7a or 8 before things went wrong.

God I hope I havent confused you too much... thanks for your help. Please reply ASAP...

Re: DirectX or Direct3D Problems - Can't run 3D Games

OK, your problem is not limited to direct 3D, you are having problems with both direct 3D (Unreal) and openGL(Quake).

It is most likely you have a video driver problem.

First reset you video back to standard PCI SVGA, and try re-installing your video drivers.

If not successful go looking on the net for newer video drivers.

Also I recommend installing Direct X 8.0a, if you only have 8.0

Also make sure you do not have the "slider" turned down in your hardware aceleration options under System-performance-graphics.

Re: DirectX or Direct3D Problems - Can't run 3D Games

Thanks for your help, I have seriously tried to do all of the things you have said but they don't work! I don't have a clue what to do to fix it.

Now... one thing... how do you set the display to PCI SVGA? When I re-installed new drivers (and I tried the old ones again) I didn't set it back to that, so maybe that's why it didn't work.

Anyone who knows the answer, please tell! I don't want to have to result to formatting the computer again (for the like, 50th time!)

Thanks...

Re: DirectX or Direct3D Problems - Can't run 3D Games

To be sure, I would try to reinstalling everything on your computer again - that means windows too! After that, open up your case and reinsert the sound card, video card, etc...

I think I could even be a DirectX8 problem - don't install it maybe try an earlier version such as DirectX7 or something.

I am having a problem like this too. After installing directx8 my 3d games stopped working. i am reformatting my computer too fix it.

Re: DirectX or Direct3D Problems - Can't run 3D Games

I had similar problems to this. To fix, I checked my RAM chips, defragged my disk, made sure the swap file was NOT limited to a small amount, removed all video drivers and set video to standard vga.

To set to SVGA --- Go to Start button > Control panel > Display Properties > Settings tab > Advanced button > Adapter tab... then click the Change button, search for a new driver USE THE SPECIFY location BUTTON! NOT AUTOMATIC SEARCH!! Then click next then click "Display a list etc" and then click next windows will then search, when it finishes, click "use one of the other drivers" then you will see "standard svga driver" in the list, select it click apply and reboot.

Once you have rebooted, Reinstall Video driver and open gl driver.

The games should work... if they don't try resetting your bios to its setup defaults and see if this fixes your problem...

It took me a lot of stuffing around to fix my hassles and my pc still has a hissy fit every now and then.... Ah the joys of computing!!! Hope this helps Bye!
