Athlon Overheating (3 posts)

My AMD athlon 64 x2 4800+ on the am2 socket is overheating it came with a active heatsink and the processor in a box.

The cpu hits 80c when it has a load and shuts down to protect itself. I have reapplied the thermal paste and it is spread on the cpu properly.

Do you have any ideas on how to fix this problem?

Thanks JD

Re: Athlon Overheating

Did you clean off the surfaces completely? If the paste is too thick it will overheat. You must use a good quality paste (such as Arctic Silver 5), and it must be applied very thinly. It is not intended to form a pad, just a smear to fill in any irregularities in the contact surfaces. I apply it by putting a couple of spots on one side of the CPU, then pulling a razor blade across the surface several times to spread it evenly, after which most of what I spotted on finishes up on the blade and is discarded.
