How do I successfully block MSN messenger to stop my kids from being on it all day? I have a Dlink 524up router & the kids have a wireless connection to that. I tried to block port 1863 in the router from the hours of 8 till 3, but it seems after no success & more research that MSN changes to port 80 if it cant find a connection on 1863 & I dont want to block all internet traffic, just MSN. Also I would rather do it on the router or the modem (Dlink502T) end, than a software client on their machine as they are enterprising little buggers & I would rather know it was in my hands only.
Can anyone help please?
Pete :)

Re: Blocking MSN Messenger
I did this using the parental control settings in Norton Internet Security. The catch is that Symantec classified MSN as a general program and not as an instant messaging program? I then had 2 logins, one which blocked MSN and one that allowed it.
The kids then got around that by using Bebo. They were a couple of years older by then so I did not go to the effort of blocking that.

Re: Blocking MSN Messenger
Very simple. Here are the rules. Break them and the wireless cards come out. Obviously they have PCs in their bedrooms, a very bad idea at best. If you can be sure they are on MSN, this is probably the safest option as there is at least a token attempt to ensure safety. But you are going about this all wrong. The internet pc should be in a public area and the bedroom machines are for games and homework. Children disappear all over the world. Could it happen to yours? Absolutely.

Re: Blocking MSN Messenger
Yeah Chris, I do have rules like that. Normally I just take the routers antenna out & hide it, works a treat.... When I'm there, it's more when I'm at work & not able to monitor it. To block the internet completely would rule out them doing any homework etc, etc they need to do on line, so disallowing MSN during certain hours seems the best solution. And no they don't have computers in their rooms, I have all the bits I need to build them one each and I'd love to, but I won't for the exact reason you state. Their computer is in the kids room, clearly visible to us at all times. Hence the dissapearing antenna. Any other ideas?

Re: Blocking MSN Messenger
Right click the icon. Click Find Target. Copy the exe to a cd or floppy. Delete the original. Ensure they are using a restricted account so they can't install anything. Restore the file when you want to allow connection.
