Internet Sharing (5 posts)

I have an assortment of computers networked (peer to peer) ranging from 486's to PII and Celerons of varying speeds. I wish to share the internet.

I have selected share internet on the computer with the modem, made the disk to setup the other machines and followed the instructions to the letter. It doesn't work and the computers that are sharing cant find the web.

Re: Internet Sharing

Jim,

See my answer to 'Can't Connect to the Net'. The only home versions of Windows that can handle Internet Connection Sharing are Win98 and WinME.

Re: Internet Sharing

ICS which comes with Win98 and WinME needs to be installed on the server machine only and the client machine needs to have internet explorer configured to access the internet via a LAN. Maybe you are having problems because of the number of machines on your network, I don't know.

Check the network on each PC, make sure TCP/IP is installed on each machine and the binding is correct. If everything looks ok and ICS still lets you down, I would try using a proxy server instead of ICS. Analogx proxy is free and it works, you can download it at www.analogx.com and the read me file has all the information you need to get going.

Re: Internet Sharing

My personal opinion is not to use ICS but to use a 'proxy' server on the host machine.

I use a freeware program called Jana proxy on my host machine and all the other machines connect to the internet via the proxy. If you are not using DHCP then you will need to give each machine its own IP address including the host machine.

Say you give the host machine an address of 192.168.0.1, and the other machines are 192.168.0.2 etc. You will tell the browsers on the other machines to use 192.168.0.1 as the proxy server. I probably haven't explained it very well here so browse the WWW looking for info on setting up a proxy server in the home environment. There is plenty of freeware proxy software available and they are usually easy to setup and will run on any version of windows from 95 up. (With a bit extra effort you can also set up your own mail server etc - the possibilities are endless - have fun.) wg

Re: Internet Sharing

Aahh! i had this problem before! i fixed it by setting up the internet sharing machines IP address to 192.168.0.1, then I set all the clients up to the option 'Obtain an IP address automatically'

set up the machines with these instructions:

1. right click on 'network neibourhood' or 'my network places' then press properties. (This is the shortcut to network properties)

2. select the network adapters tcp/ip protocol, then click properties.

3. select the IP address tab if its not already selected then:

for the server machine, type in the first box 192.168.0.1 and the second 255.255.255.0

For the clients 'Obtain an IP address automatically'

reboot the server machine, when thats loaded up reboot the client machines. Hopefully everything works well!

This all works perfectly for me because win 98/me's ICS has a mini unconfigurable DHCP server built in.

If you are happy with stuffin around with network properties download this exeptional ICS fiddler-arounderer http://lynx.neu.edu/a/amccombs

I hope i helped!
