I buy and sell shares through online broker eTrade. When a Company makes an announcement, it is shown on my portfolio as an PDF file and available as a download. Lately I have been unable to download these files. When I click on the file, instead of the contents of the file appearing on the computer screen, I am asked if I want to "OPEN" "SAVE" or "CANCEL" but no matter which button I click, no action takes place. In other words the opening of the file is blocked. Any suggestions?

Re: PDF files
Association may be damaged. Update to Reader 9. This should fix it. If not, find a PDF on your system, Shift right click, select open with, tick always use, select adobe reader 9. OK. Should be right now.

Re: PDF files
Hi,
Possibly the easiest way to over come this issue is to hold done the 'shift' key while you click on the file to download. This will override any pop up security type features you may have enabled.
When you download the file - take note of the location where you save the file, and attempt to open manually by going to that location via 'my computer' or the likes.
If the file is there however does not open, you can right click and go to 'open with' then locate 'adobe reader' from the list.
There will be a tick box in the bottom of this window which you can check to be as 'always use'.
If this still doesn't work, there may be an issue with your install of Adobe. Best to go to www.adobe.com and download a new copy of the free reader, and install.
Hope this helps.

Re: PDF files
Instead of the bloat of Adobe, try Sumatra PDF. It's free and lightning fast. You can get it here:-

Re: PDF files
I use Foxit PDF Reader with Opera. No probs! However with Firefox, Foxit won't open PDFs, whereas Adobe Reader would (until I ditched it!) Haven't a clue as to what's going on, but I guess you'd call it a successful work-around !
Cheers,
Alan
Re: PDF files
I also use Foxit and have no probs with it using Firefox except with certain websites who will not allow a PDF view/download if you don't use a specific program - I've had to reinstall Adobe (which was, for some reason, stuffing up my machine - totally crashed it).
Give each a go and see what works but uninstall/reinstall your current one first - who knows it just could be a small disagreement with another program.
Good luck,
Allan
Re: PDF files
Alan Singleton. I've found the same problem with Firefox and Foxit. However, Nitro PDF Pro works a charm, it even puts a toolbar onto Firefox so you can make a PDF of any web page you're viewing.
Re: PDF files
You need Adobe Reader (184 mb) download from Adobe.com or you can get Foxit Reader (4 mb) from Foxitreader.com These readers will open the PDF files for you once they are installed.
Foxit Reader is my favourite as it is a small piece of software and it is much faster than Adobe Reader
Re: PDF files
0,
If you can't be bothered setting a useful user-name, you should at least sign off with a name. Simple etiquette - you're asking a favour of someone; don't be anonymous.
If the PDF relates to your trades, it will be protected by a password. E*Trade will have sent you an e-mail (check your Spam folders if you haven't seen it) with the password.
You've had a lot of suggestions now. Let us know the result.
