How can I run the older DOS games like "Aces of the Pacific" etc. on a P111 with Win 98?

Re: Dos Games

Hey Colin,

When your computer boots up into whatever OS you are using, and the words Starting Windows 98 come up quickly press F8. Then a bootup menu will appear, and you usually have around half a minute to make a choice. Select boot into MS DOS mode. When the command line comes up, enter in the address of the game you want to play (assuming it is installed, and that you know where the Aces of the Pacific is located) and run it! Hopefuly this works... If it doesn't, then when you are in the bootup menu, try Command Prompt only choice instead. (this doesn't load up any drivers, Safe Mode equivelent).

Re: Dos Games

That did not work for me. I'm told that I do not have enough lower memory to run the older DOS games I have. I need 566k but only have 550k. and to adjust TSR's and change EMS memory? This is for my older games on AMD 500 with win98 and 128 RAM.

Hi Colin,

It may sound a bit obvious but have you tried running your games from the MSDOS prompt?

Failing that, try going to START-SHUTDOWN-RESTART IN MS_DOS MODE. I`ve had no trouble with either.

Another way which works usually [but not always] is to load the program from MY COMPUTER, then locate it on the "C" drive, right click and send to the desktop as a shortcut.

WINDOWS 95/98 works differently to the early versions,it is far more stable, but still a dog of a system. Failing all that, set up a pure DOS partition exclusively for your DOS games.

Good Luck!

Re: Dos Games

Colin,

You need to do the following.

1. Install your games as per normal setup routine.
2. Make an icon on your desktop (or wherever) for you game. Right click the icon, go to properties and set all the memory options to "automatic".

Also set the "dos mode" selection to automatic.

Depending on the game you may also need to set the "hide windows from msdos programs" option.

You will need to set up DOS soundcard drivers, through either using a "SET BLASTER" command line in your autoexec, (Specific to your sound card) or if your sound card drivers are good enough, make sure your "legacy dos" options are enabled and configured correctly through your "system" "hardware" options for the soundcard.

You stand the best chance of everything working if you use IRQ 7,(5 pretty good to) amd DMA 1, with 220 as your address. This is compatable with most Dos Games.

If all that fails you will need to get a DOS 5 boot disc, (to get enough memory) configure all your drivers etc on the disc, and use that to boot each time you want to play your Dos game.
