Although my machine is a part of domain network, it doesn't highlight itself in network tree (cannot be seen). Now, I can access anybody outside but nobody can access my machine as it cannot be seen in network tree, shared or otherwise. I tried renaming it which doesn't help. I am using window 2000 pro. Do anybody have solution? Thanks in advance.

Re: PC not identifying itself on network tree
Of course I tried that without any help. I also can ping any machine in the network but when I do it otherway round, no machine can locate my machine.

Check the firewall settings. Disable temporarily to see if it works then.

Re: PC not identifying itself on network tree
There are 2 things that could be possibly causing this issue:
1) Misconfigured software firewall
2) Problem with 'file and printer sharing for microsoft networks' service. I would recommend removing this from the list of installed network clients, protocols & services then reboot, add it again and reboot again.
One other thing to try: if you go onto a working client machine and try pinging the IP address (not hostname) of the computer which will not show in 'my network places' does it respond or time out?
If either of these steps don't work please let me know and I will help you further.
Cheers,

Re: PC not identifying itself on network tree
Have you got file and print sharing enabled?
Here's how:
First, right click on "My Network Places" and select "Properties".
Next, find your Network Card (probably labeled "Local Area Connection" or the name of the type of Ethernet adapter you have installed), right click on it, and select "Properties".
Check that there is a tick in this box "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks".
Hope this helps

Yes Sir, Mr. Parsons, you hit the jackpot.
I did as you said and there it comes. (Problem with 'file and printer sharing for microsoft networks' service. I would recommend removing this from the list of installed network clients, protocols & services then reboot, add it again and reboot again.) Thank you very much and the same goes to Chris B. I enjoy reading you too. Thanks again,
