Vundo and bootable CD (4 posts)

I have had problems with a recurring virus "Vundo" on one of my computers. Time and time again I use "VudoFix" to remove it, also Nortons AV (both in safe mode) but it comes back. So far I have been reluctant to touch the registry to correct it.

I have been referred to a program that creates a bootable CD and possibly to repair from this. I do not know this program and a Google search shows a lot of sites offering downloads but no endorsements from a reputable site.

Can anyone out there advise please? thanks Bill Holland

Re: Vundo and bootable CD

If this wretched thing keeps recurring, it is lodged on your hard drive somewhere. I know it's a pain in the rear end but I would be inclined to back up any data you wish to keep and reformat the hard drive and reload..........Dave

Re: Vundo and bootable CD

Do not download and install anything unknown. This is what caused the problem in the first place. (98% of free progs which promise to clean your system will actually infect it) Turn off system restore and ensure that all restore point data has been deleted. Remove Norton. Install AVG7 from www.free.grisoft.com. Install Spybot S&D from www.safer-networking.org. Update and run both. Ensure that you install/activate the resident protection component of Spybot. It is called Teatimer. Run Spybot several times, then immunise. If you use it, now turn system restore back on. How now?

G’day Bill

Vundo may be a part of the group of Spyware “Smitfraud” Download Smitfraudfix by Siti from

http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php

Read the instructions Turn system restore off to stop reinfection and restart in Safe Mode. Run the SmitfraudFix.cmd file. It will take some time I’ve used it successfully many times when all else has failed.
