Projectors vs TVs? (4 posts)

It's true that if you want a REALLY big-screen picture, you've got to get a projector... you certainly can't get a 300-inch plasma (and if you could it would cost the earth)!

There is plenty of debate, however, on whether a projector can beat a TV for all-round usage. TVs are bulky and need an entertainment unit to sit on - unless you can hack into your wall for a mount - but projectors take time to warm up, need less ambient light, can consume more power...

Which do you think is best for the average user, and the real enthusiast?

projector vs tv

If a person is wanting a large viewing image then the projector is the way to go. If you were to compare prices to the viewing image then a tv would cost you thousands compared with the image size of the projector.

One downside you need to consider is that the average lamp life if you are using the projector for full time viewing (as you would with a tv) is approx 12 to 18 months then you need to buy a new lamp approx $400 - $600. However with a tv you don't need to replace lamps etc for maintenance/repairs (so to speak).

Tradtionly you will need a feature wall to project the image on and perferably a dark room (with good sun block out drapes). If you haven't got this then stick to the tv.

Also with the projector you may ceiling mount it or bookshelf mount. Dont forget the screen, a permanently mounted screen which is motorised is a good way to go and you can acheive good bargans (if you do your homework) with Grays on Line or Ebay etc.

The next issue with a projector is if you are using Foxtel or want Foxtel, then stick with a TV. Otherwise HD TV (freeview) is brillant with a projector but Foxtel is crap, dont get conned by a salesperson. This is all to do with how much Foxtel compreses the data on their braodcasts in their bandwith (a friend of mine is a senior tech for Broadcast Australia & he tell's me not to both with installing foxtel as it is definitely not suitable with a projector.

For the kids with their Wii/playstation you just can't beat a projector, just ask my kids!!.

In conclusion if you are adding a new room to your house (or building a new house) include a home theatre room in the design and definatley install a projector - will not be disappointed!
