Setting Up New SATA Drive (3 posts)

Hi, I am desperate to find out how to setup a SATA drive as a single system drive and (or) slave drive with an IDE as master.

The event so far is: As I have unsuccessfully tried this before I have an experimental setup where I can do no damage to any data, spare PC old 40 Gig IDE Seagate drive + new 80 Gig SATA Seagate connected to PCI SATA – IDE Combo Controller.

Installed and running very smooth XP Pro Slipstreamed SP3 + Slipstreamed nLite SATA Driver Pack including WinXP Promise Fast Track 376 Controller on IDE drive.

At this stage Windows can not see the SATA drive. On boot up Promise Fast Track 376 shows up and pressing Ctrl – F will bring up the Promise Fast Track Utility with the 5 segments.

I have been told that for the setup that I want I can not use Stripe or Mirror. Auto Setup [1] shows Optimize Array for Performance, “Mode Stripe” and it shows up my 80 Gig SATA drive, drive(s) used in Array 1. But this is not what I believe I require but I can see nothing anywhere where I can change that to single drive setup.

I do have downloaded in case I need to do a Floppy F6 setup the promise drivers Fast Track 376 -378 -1.00.1.39 – 41. If anyone can guide me from here on I would be eternally grateful.

Bill

Re: Setting Up New SATA Drive

You say that you are using a PCI controller card to attach your hard drives. Just an idea here... Have you run the driver disk that came with the card? If not the chances are that it can only see the IDE disk.

Cheers

Re: Setting Up New SATA Drive

Unfortunately the controller came with no driver CD, but I have installed the Promise Fast Build 376-378 drivers, and with a bit of this and that Windows is now seeing the drive in Disk Management and My computer as a Dynamic Disk and I can copy and save files to it but when I try to install Win XP onto it using F6 and then S drivers from Floppy it will always come up with Windows can not detect any Hard Drive. thanks Bill
