I have three computers on the net. OS winxp pro sp2. One is a new computer and only shows one Realtek local area connector in Network Connections.
The other computers show two 1394 connector and a Lan Area Connection in Device Manager. On the other 2 computers In Device Manager 2 cards are shown. I can send and receive from the other two computers but they can't connect to this one or open Mshome.
All 3 connect to the Internet OK.
The Mobo is ASUS P5B 775 core2 duo, Modem Surfboard sb5100,router Dlink 704UP
Thanks for any advice.

Re: Computers will not file transfer
Sharing is disabled by default. Right click Shared documents, click sharing and security and enable. Ensure that they are all in the same workgroup. Right click My Network Places, click Properties, Advanced, Network Identification. Then it should work. If it still doesn't open a command prompt and ping one of the others by network address. If this fails, the network is not properly connected, or a firewall is incorrectly set.

p.s. To determine an ip address, open a command prompt and type ipconfig.
To ping a computer type ping e.g. 192.168.0.1

Re: Computers will not file transfer
Hi I did what you suggested. I had already done this. Still no luck. When I "map the network drive" on one of the other computers, then go to +Mshome, the "egg timer" comes up!! I tried the ping and timed out. I tried ipconfig release and renew. Just a repeat Chris, why do I see only one "LAN connection in my Network connections folder and in the other computers 2.ie 1394 connection and LAN connection? Hmmm, I am positive that you could fix the problem with a couple of keystrokes if you were here!! Thanks for your help. Have a good Easter holiday.

Re: Computers will not file transfer
Chris, sorry mate. The ping command works OK with 192.168.0.1 but not when I ping the ip address on one of the other computers (Ethernet adapter) 192.168.0.150..Sorry for the error.

Apologies for the delay in responding. Are you still having issues? If so ... I am assuming you are using DHCP. Is your modem or router running this or do you have ICS running on one PC? Do an ipconfig/all on each PC and post the results here. This will answer most questions I think. We shall see.

Re: Computers will not file transfer
Thanks Chris,
Yes, I have DHCP. Use the supplied Bigpond modem and a Dlink router. ll is working now. I had a problem with the memory in my 'main computer'. I returned the 2 sticks and was supplied with "better" memory, well dearer, but was not asked to pay the extra cost!!
Reformatted the HD and installed all my programs. Mapped the network drives etc. Touch wood all going well!
Thank you for your helpful input to me and others on this site. your valuable time helping others is really appreciated.
