I am helping a local non-profit org with their network they wanted to add a computer to their network to allow public access to the internet. They use Bigpond.
Their network consists of a Billion ADSL modem connected to a 6 port Dlink switch, to avoid running more underfloor cable I disconnected one computer added another switch then with two short cables reconnected the computer and added the new computer (running Win 98). All computers on the network except the new additon with Win 98 can browse the internet, when a web address is typed in it is redirected to the Bigpond cative portal.
The Modem can be pinged OK as can external addresses, I have clean installed Win 98, if I connect the computer to my home network Dlink G604T modem router, aanet ISP, it can browse OK. It seems to be some problem with Bigpond and that computer. Can anyone help

Re: BigPond acces to networked PC
That was a smart thing to do to try the PC on your home network. The fact that it works there indicates there's nothing wrong with it.
I'd suggest you check the configuration of the Billion router to ensure there's not a limit on the number of clients configured into it or its DHCP configuration. But that shouldn't result in the symptoms you're getting of being able to ping internet addresses but the browser not working.
If no-one else can point to what your problem is I'd suggest you try the whirlpool (http://www.whirlpool.net.au/) forum. That's one specifically for internet and ISP related problems. They have a lot more expertise in that area than we do.

Re: BigPond acces to networked PC
Problem fixed.
Updated IE to Ver 6 and manually entered the DNS server address.
