Running two PCs (15 posts)

Could please help me with running two pc together. I am 62yrs old disabilaty pensioner. Can you help me please, chris

Re: Running two PCs

Some questions. What operating systems are you using? Do the PC's have network cards already (cat5 sockets at the back. Like a telephone jack but bigger)? Relax, this is cheap, just fill in the details so we can give the right advice.

Re: Running two PCs

At the moment you have not told us enough about what you want to do or what your equipment is for us to give you help. Expand it a bit so we can know what you are thinking.

Re: Running two PCs

Hi Chris,

This is can be a fairly straight forward setup. If you have a network card in each computer you will be able to use a crossover cable and link them together (this is a cheap solution). Another way of doing this is using a router or hub and link both computers into that.

Please let us know what version of Windows you are running and if you already have network cards in each computer.

Once we have that information we will be able to help you with the setup.

Re: Running two PCs

Hi Chris

If you want to connect them, I would still like to know if they have network cards already as I mentioned in my earlier post. Another option, if you just need 1 computer and want extra storage space, is to take the hard drive out of the slower/older machine and put it in the better machine. Then you can use the second disk for storage. If you want to do this let us know so we can supply detailled instructions. Don't try it without discussing it further.

Re: Running two PCs

OK. A number of steps here, and it is very common for this not to work right away, so don't get disheartened if you are not successful first time.

First, go to the local PC shop and buy a crossover cable long enough to connect your machines. CROSSOVER, not NETWORK. Plug it in to the network cards.

Both Computers. Right Click Network Neighborhood. (Left) Click Properties. Click File & Print sharing. Tick both boxes and click OK. Click Identification at the top of the box. Make sure that the Workgroup name is the same on both computers. Change one of them if they are different.

One computer ( the one connected to the internet). Next you need to install Internet Connection Sharing if it isn't already. Go to Control Panel, Add Remove Programs, Windows Setup. Scroll down to Internet tools, click it, then click Details. The first item on the list is Internet Connection Sharing. If it is NOT ticked, tick it and OK out. Your Win98 CD willl be required at this point if the files are not already installed on your hard disk. If it is ticked, just cancel out.

This is enough for one sitting. Post back with results thus far.

Go slowly, take it easy.

Re: Running two PCs

Hi Chris,

There are many ways to do this, the cheapest two which come to mind are as follows...

1. Using 2x network cards or interface connections buy yourself a cross over cable... Then setup in you networking settings the relevant settings and you should be away... (you might want to google search this, and you should be able to find a simply and easy to understand setup guide).

2. Even cheaper if you dont have Network cards, or connections, check out a USB type network cross over cable... These can be picked up for about $35-65 from your local computer retailer. You should find all relevant setup information comes with this cable, if not ask at the store.

Hope this helps, very basic answer, but should start you off on the right foot, if there is anything else I can help with please let me know....

:)
