Networking problem after installing Zone Alarm (6 posts)

I have a network consisting of 3 machines running Win XP and one with Win ME and a HP Laser Jet 4 plus all running through a hub.

I initially set up the network between 2 of the XP machines and the laser printer and had everything talking to everything else including the printer.

I then installed Zone Alarm on my machine at which time the network access to the second machine failed.

I then uninstalled Zone Alarm but the damage was done such that the second machine (my wife's that did NOT have Zone Alarm installed) could access my machine successfully but my machine could not gain access to her machine but could access the printer.

Thinking that it was a problem with my machine I eventually bit the bullet and reformatted and reloaded Win XP, however the same problem has re-occurred.

I have since set up the other Win XP and the Win ME machines. Both of them can access my machine and the printer successfully and my machine can connect to them as well but my wife's machine is an island.

None of the other 3 machines can access her machine but hers can access any of the machines in the network. Accessing her machine results in "//server/share is not accessable ... Access Denied" Is there a setting in her machine (which has NEVER had Zone Alarm installed) which needs to be reset or do I have to reformat and reload XP?

Any help greatly appreciated

Carl

Re: Networking problem after installing Zone Alarm

Hi Carl,

Please check that are drives shared on your wife's computer Hard disk. If not enable sharing and you will be able to access her computer. Also if it is already checked do uninstall file and printer sharing from network properties abd reinstall it again. I think this is nothing to do with Zonealarm , Its more to do with the sharing somehow getting disabled

Best of luck,

Kash

Re: Networking problem after installing Zone Alarm

Hi Kash,

Thanks for the info. However, it hasn't resolved the problem.

As suggested, I removed all networking settings (including deleting IP addresses) from all 4 machines and ran the network setup wizard on each of them. I also ensured all IP addresses were valid and in the same workgroup.

I still have the situation of "Ginny" being able to talk to and access resources on the other 3 machines AND each of the other 3 machines talking with each other BUT none of them can access "Ginny"

Really weird

Cheers

Carl

Re: Networking problem after installing Zone Alarm

You can share files between computers running ZoneAlarm. Open ZoneAlarm - then clck "Firewall" - "Zones" - "ADD" then set IP Address, IP Range or Subnet.

Re: Networking problem after installing Zone Alarm

Carl... in Zone Alarm, then in the Firewall setting tab, you can add the IP address, Subnet Mask and names of the computers that you need to access, this has to be done on each computer on the network in order to give permission for each system to access the others. Hope this is of use.

Re: Networking problem after installing Zone Alarm

Thanks for the advice.

Unfortunately the last couple of responses assume I'm still using Zone Alarm. Zone Alarm is NOT INSTALLED on any of the machines. The only machine it WAS installed on has since been upgraded severely and Windows XP installed on a new freshly formatted hard drive.

The machine that is not permitting access to it's resources has NEVER had Zone Alarm or any other 3rd party firewall installed on it. It does, however, have the XP SP1 Windows firewall activated on dial up networking.

Thanks again for your advice.

Cheers

Carl
