My office just bought 2 new IBM thinkcentres (Model 8183-B1M).
After 2 days of trying everything we can think of we cannot get the 2 new computers to print to our network printer. We are using TCP/IP. I can ping the printer from existing workstations. The previous computers had no problems. All of our office computers (including the new ones) run Win XP. Our server is old and running Win NT - but bear in mind that the previous computers and other existing older computers were and are running Win XP - so I cannot see how the server is the problem.
I have a very good IT knowledge, myself, and neither me or our IT technician can solve the problem. IBM wont help us because the printer is not an IBM printer. I have also asked several friends who are in the networking business and no one has come across this problem before.
The problem is definitely isolated to the new computers. All network settings are the same as other existing office computers.
Has anyone come across a problem like this before?

Re: PCs wont print
Are you running a domain or workgroup? Can you see / attach to the printer from the new stations or does the printer not show when you browse for it? Have you created login accounts on the NT box to match the logins on the new XP machines? The last item mentioned is the likely problem if you are not running a domain.

Re: PCs wont print
We run a domain. The domain has been in place for years. The new computers can see the printer. And install it as a network printer. They cannot ping the printer however. I have run many checks. And quite a few professionals have looked at the problem now and cannot find a solution. These new IBM's simply will not communicate with the Toshiba network printer.
We have found a dodgy solution I will post it in case it helps someone else...
After a search on the net, we found a couple of USA websites mentioning similar problems with Toshiba printers. Their solution (both different sites) was to install the printer again on the server as a secondary printer with a different name - using HP Laserjet drivers. The Toshiba drivers were modelled on the HP ones apparently. This 'secondary' printer was then installed on the 2 new IBM computers. And we can now print to the Toshiba.
A bit odd, but it works. Havent noticed any problems as yet.
