From time to time I have a requirement to scan a page or two of an A4 size document and attach it to an email.
When I do this, I end up with what seems to be a huge magnified copy of my A4 document at the end of my email (the same happens when I scan in photos).
I use a HP Officejet 6110 All-in-one for my scanning and generally save the scanned document as a JPEG file.
Obviously, I need to change some settings before scanning however I haven't had any success with what I have done to date.
Can anyone point me in the right direction please?
Thanks
Ernie

Re: How do I scan & attach to an email?
If when you scan it produces too big an image, you have to reduce the resolution the scanner scans at. For example mine offers anywhere from 100x100 dpi to 2400x2400 dpi. A standard fax is only 100x100 dpi, a high resolution fax is 200x200 dpi. Your scanner's scanning software should allow you to set the default resolution. And if you don't like how big/small or clear/unclear the image is just change it and scan again.
The other thing you can change is the colour depth. For sending faxes you only need black and white. i.e , one bit per pixel. It increases the file size if you do a "grey scale" scan. It increases it even more if its a colour scan. 24-bit colour looks great for things like photos, but it creates a huge file.
So you have to choose those two scanning settings, resolution and black and white or colour, to be as much as you need to produce the quality of image you want, but no more than you require, because they increase the image and file size. Go into your scanning software and play around a bit and see what you need.

Re: How do I scan & attach to an email?
Ernie,
I read your question differently from Gordon. Is your problem that you want to attach the file rather than embed it in to the e-mail? If so (assuming you are running XP), scan the document/photo and save it as a jpeg in a suitable folder.
Go to that folder and right click and select 'SEND TO' then 'MAIL RECIPIENT'.
XP will then ask if you want to reduce the size of you file or keep original size. Depending on the use by the other person (and connection speeds of both users) select as appropriate.
Your e-mail client should then automatically open with the doc/photo in the attachments box ready for you to type your e-mail. As a guide to reduction capability, my digital camera photos are generally about 3MB each photo, using the above they reduce to about 70KB each. This is fine if I just want somebody to see the photo and maybe use it as a screen wallpaper, but needs to be left at full size if they intend to print it out (and want a quality print).
Hope this all helps
Matt

Re: How do I scan & attach to an email?
Thanks Gordon & Matt for your help. Matt's interpretation was correct - I'm afraid I didn't explain my problem very well.
I was chasing settings/procedure that would simply allow me to attach a JPEG file (whose file size/resolution I was happy with) without ending up with a magnified copy of the JPEG file in the body of my email (similar to when you attach a MS Word document - you don't get a copy of your document in the body of the email).

Re: How do I scan & attach to an email?
Hi again Gordon & Matt.
I have now tried out what Matt suggested however I note that a magnified copy of the jpeg file is still embedded in the body of the email at the very end.
I take it from what you suggested that you do not get these magnified copies embedded in your emails?
I am using XP SP2 and Outlook Express.
Any other suggestions?

Try sending the email as plain text, then you won't see the jpg in the body of the mail
