Office Network (3 posts)

Hey,

I've just got my laptop setup on my office network, the internet works fine. But only the browser is working, because I had to setup up a Manual HTTP proxy in firefox eg.. 10.343.234.1 and port 8080.. but, when I go into any other program that may use the internet eg. Live messenger, iTunes, Limewire, uTorrent... it tells me there is no interent connection because i havnt setup the proxy.. is there a application for my comptuer that i can enter the 2 settings i was told ip: 10.343.234.1 and port: 8080.. and then have the whole comptuer be able to use these settings? so all the programs connect like its a direct connection to the internet?

is there some software to do this, or settings in windows that i can use?

Thanks, Will

Re: Office Network

The values you've shown for the IP address look odd, especially as to the 343 part. The maximum value for a part of an IP address is 255, so perhaps you need to revise your setup, even though the browser is working.

The reason why it would be a problem is that when something is sent back to the proxy for return to your laptop, your own proxy won't cope with the address you've assigned your laptop. Something like 10.100.100.130 would be advisable.

If you look, you might see a "gateway" IP address of 255.255.255.255 or 255.255.255.0 both of which are common, and the first one is the absolute top of the range. It's this limit on the available addresses under the current IPv4 system, which has brought about the need for and development of IPv6.

I believe that for the proxy settings to work for programs other than Firefox you will need to put them into'Internet Options' found in Control Panel or accessed via Internet Explorer-Tools-Internet Options. On the tab headed 'Connections' click on LAN Settings and click on check box for proxy server and then fill in the details. Make you sure you have the correct IP address of the proxy server.
