My Network Places - Permission Problems (4 posts)

I am running two XP machines - one main and the other secondary. I have shared out drives on both machines, but on the secondary machine when I go into Windows Explorer and click on My Network Places - Entire Network - Microsoft Windows Network - Workgroup, and then click on the name of the main machine, I get an error which reads "main is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions." However, if I map each of the available drives for the main machine from the secondary machine, the main machine allows it. So why do I get the permissions error?

Re: My Network Places - Permission Problems

1/ Create an account with the same name and password as your XP PC. This has to be created on the 98 computer.

2/ Add the account on the 98 PC as an allowed member in windows XP security manangement. If it is not on the allowed list it will be blocked from accessing the PC.

After you perform step one, try to gain access. If you are still denied, you must add the user though mmc and allow the account.

Hi Brent: First, Make sure BOTH firewalls are OFF then setup an account with the same username and password that you use on Main.

Re: My Network Places - Permission Problems

Hi Guys,

Thanks for taking the time to respond. Both machines are using Windows XP - there is no 98 computer. Both machines have the same user and password. I did a search on Google and found a site that talked about switching off simple file sharing via Windows Explorer - Tools - Folder Options - View, then untick 'Use simple file sharing (Recommended)'. This enabled me to see the default mapping of $D, $E, etc for all of my drives. I think that somehow the secondary machine was accessing these mappings instead of the ones I created, i.e. Drive_e, Drive_f, etc. Anyway I recreated all of my mappings with simple file sharing off and all seems to work now.

Thanks again,

Take care.

Brent.
