networking via modem (3 posts)

I was wondering is it possible to network to computers in the same home together via modem. Like dial up networking but without using phone line.

Re: networking via modem

Modems are only useful when connected to phone lines so you would need two phone lines to network two computers using modems.

As an alternative, you might consider a null-modem cable or laplink cable which should enable the two computers to be networked (at a very slow speed)for the purchase of just a cable.

The best solution for networking two computers is to purchase two network cards and a crossover cable (which would give you a high speed network connection). With more than two computers the only effective way to network is with a network card in each computer connected to a hub.

Re: networking via modem

You could use a serial cable or parallel cable (if the PC's are next to each other) and connect them using the 'direct cable connection' software in Windows.

However, you could buy a pair of $30 100Mb network cards and a $20 crossover cable and it will be approximately 50 to 100 times faster.
