Thermal Paste (3 posts)

Hi, when resetting a heatsink with a dry connecting or damaged pad, onto a CPU, is it better to scrape off the pad and completely cover the surface of the CPU with thermal paste? Will the connection, without a pad, gain enough pressure to work effectively?

Thanks Ilad

Re: Thermal Paste

Remove the remains of the pad from both surfaces with one of those stiff backed razor blades, apply a few dots of paste along one edge of the CPU and spread the paste over the CPU surface with the same (cleaned) blade. A very fine even layer is required, too much will have the opposite effect, the CPU will overheat. Use a good quality paste. I recommend Arctic Silver 5. This is a silver/ceramic compound and is very stable.

p.s. Pads are a very poor alternative to a good paste, I always remove them even from new equipment and use the paste.

Thanks again Chris B.
