Can't network '98 machine (3 posts)

Hello,

I have just bought a computer that is running windows xp professional and I want to hook it up to my other computer which is running windows 98SE. The connection that I have got is a phoneline cable through a standard netgear card (winxp) and a standard network card (win98).

The problem that I face is that when I run the wizard on xp it tells me to insert a disk. I do that, put it into my other computer '98, and it can't run the program. The message it gives me is 'Windows did not find an Internet gateway on your network. Check to be sure that all cables are connected correctly and that you are running one of the following:

* A computer that is running Winxp or greater with internet connection sharing enable

or

* An internet gateway with Universal Plug and Play enabled'

Please help me.

Any ideas you can email me at:

If you are connecting the pc's directly, you need a crossover cable. Do a Google for the wiring diagram. A standard straight through network cable will not work.

I agree, but you can purchase an adaptor that will convert a straight through cable to a crossover. The was the industry is today an alternative would be to purchase a switch in which case all straight through cables are good. A cheap switch is about $20 - $30.
