I just installed a new Windows XP Pro and everything went fine until few minutes later everything becamse oh-so-slow...
I couldn't even install one small program.
So I pressed the ctrl+alt+del to see which program was taking all the CPU usage and found a process called - System Idle Process; constantly using 95-99%!!!!
I tried terminating the process but it wouldn't let me.
I'm stuck and I can barely type these words - it's like the screen refreshes every minutes!!!
I would really appreciate your help...

It is normal for "System Idle Process" to be showing high CPU usage. This will not be what is slowing your machine down. Look for another process that is loading your CPU up.
The Windows Task Manager is a bit cryptic when it comes to describing exactly what a process is. Go here:

and download "Process Explorer". It is a great freeware utility that does a better job than the Windows Task Manager of identifying tasks. You can even right-click on a task and Google for it.

System Idle process is simply that - the system is idle (not doing anything.)
There must be another reason for your problem.

Whilever your PC is turned on, the CPU has to be doing something. It doesn't stop because it doesn't have anything to do. The System Idle Process is what it does when it has nothing else to do. It's like in a car when you stop at lights. The engine doesn't stop. It just sits there idling until it's needed. It's what the operating system tells the CPU to do when there aren't any processes that require CPU cycles.
So the fact that your System Idle Process is showing that it's using 99% of the CPU cycles just tells you that the CPU doesn't have anything thing else more important to do.
Explaining that doesn't tell you what your problem is. It only tells you what it isn't. It isn't the System Idle Process. You're going to have to look elsewhere for what it is.

Mine is 99% right now and I can type just fine. This is normal, if you leave Task manager running, you will see other processes moving up and down the list as they need resources. So what is really wrong? Something amiss with your installation. Did you install the motherboard drivers, AGP drivers, Video card driver, Network card driver (may be included with mobo driver) etc? What is the PF usage (below CPU Usage), and how much RAM is installed? What speed is your CPU?

If you run a google search on system idle process you will find that the general opinion is that a high figure is quite normal, my own system is showing 98% as I type this but my system is running normally.
I would look to other causes for a slow system.
Others may have some suggestions as to where to look first, but
I would check that your system is not loading services that you don't need like applications trying to access internet etc.

Thanks Wayne - now I know what system idle process is.
I tried uninstalling my Webroot Spysweeper and that solved the problem. Dunno why, but I'm happy to use CounterSpy instead. All works nice and speedy now.
Thanks also for that site - great utilliy it is! Certainly better than Win Task Manager.

I had the same problem, but I figured out that it's Windows updating my operating system whether I like it or not. I opened up my Windows folder on my C:/ drive then looked at the most recently modified files. I found a text document at the top called WindowsUpdate, and opened it up. It shows what's going on in a relatively readable machine language. I hate it when someone else is in control of my computer! However, if there weren't a bunch of idiots out there constantly making new viruses, I'm pretty sure Windows wouldn't have to update so insidiously.

I have also same problem. CPU uses is 80% and System Idel Process is also 80%. Normally CPU uses + System Idel Process = 100 %
This reason create problem with sound driver. Sound is not clear it contains lots of unwanted signal.
plese give me solution of this problem.
