ADSL connectivity problems (11 posts)

I have Optusnet ADSL with a D-link DSL 302G modem. Connected through either ethernet or USB, I keep getting a limited connectivity when I connect to ADSL.

I have already spent some time with Optus support, and some told me it was a firewall and another told me it was a XP bug. It varies, but it can be limited after 6 minutes or like the other day, I had a connection for 4 hours before it went limited. Support say they can do no more for me, and that I have to sort it myself. I have also be sent a replace modem, but the same happens.

After the connection goes into limited mode, the ADSL link is still active but it is like a connection between the PC and modem fails. The connectivity error wont go even if I shutdown the PC then turn off the modem and back on, then restart the PC.

If anyone has any experience with this it would be greatly appreciated.

Also, I have a collegue at work with the same problem, except she is with Telstra Big Pond, and has the same. She has been through Microsoft as well.

I have tried reinstalling the ADSL software. I have also removed XP Service Pack 2. I have even ran the ADSL on my old PIII 500, and the same thing happens.

If anyone can help, please advise.

Gary

Re: ADSL connectivity problems

Gary, If not already done, replace the cable between the PC and the ADSL modem. WHEN YOU HAVE THE FAILURE can you see the status screen of your ADSL modem at the address http://10.1.1.1 (http://10.1.1.2 if using USB). If you can that will show you the connection status to the Telephone exchange (DSLAM) and the Internet and if "Connected" then you should see your IP address. You should then switch to the Advanced Diagnostics panel to see if any CRC or HEC errors. Check the Help panel for what it all means. Has Optus asked you to check these panels? If you cant connect to the ADSL modem Status, check the status of the network by holding the mouse pointer over the Network icon in the System Tray. Your problem seems likely to be in the things you have not swapped yet. These are the connection to the internet, your cable to the ADSL modem and if using USB, the driver software. Are you using USB or Ethernet? What firewall are you using? You could try disabling the firewall temporarily to see if that allows you to work.

Re: ADSL connectivity problems

Hi Gary. Do you have ADSL line filters fitted to your telephone that is connected to the same line you use for ADSL. If you haven't connect them to all phones that are on the line. And if you already have line filters installed, check to see they are connected the right way round. Hope this helps.............Ben

Re: ADSL connectivity problems

Hi Gary,

I believe that all ADSL users have this problem. Telstra has blocked direct TCP traffic somewhere down the line. Does not matter who your ISP is. All use the same service in the end. I have been called a number of names from tech support. It is always the users fault. My ISP blocked my FTP unload for a while. When I finally proved it, their response was "Opps sorry" They told me their is no limit on my connection so i think it must be telstra.

Do the best you can with your limitations. help me as well anyone Taner

Re: ADSL connectivity problems

Hi, I have already replaced the cable between the pc and modem. When the failure happens, it is the status window in the system tray in the corner of the screen that i detect it has dropped., and no I cannot check the status of the modem at 10.1.1.2, it comes up not found.

I have tried it on both ethernet and USB, USB is the preferable choice, but I have even set it all up on my PIII 500 running Windows 98, and the same thing happens.

I have also disabled all firewalls (ZoneAlarm and Windows XP Service Pack 2 Firewall[1]) Note; The Windows firewall above is disabled as normal from ZoneAlarm

By the way, thanks to everyone for your suggestions and advice, it is very much appreciated.

Gary

Re: ADSL connectivity problems

Not sure this will be relevent to you but:

If you have had Zonealarm installed and it wasn't cleanly removed you may still end up with the VSMon service running. This service runs as a security measure even if Zonealarm program fails. It strictly applies zone rules and as such will and can block traffic. One person I helped had this problem...about every 3 minutes of internet activity could occur then VSMon stepped in and locked access. I cut the refernce out of the registry and they could again surf the web. However we did reinstall Zonealarm on their machine again. It appears they had deleted the Zonealarm files by deleting from program files directory but VSMon resides in Win XP in the System32 folders and as such was being run every time they restarted their machine. Hope this may help.

Re: ADSL connectivity problems

I guess this response is more to Taner than to Gary. I too have ADSL, using the D-Link 302G modem. However, I have not had any problems with "limitations" on my connection.

I did have some connectivity issues when using ZoneAlarm 5.5.62.004 - however these issues disappeared when I rolled back to version ~000. I have also since then changed my netwoork configuration.

Even before this I did not experience any real problems, but then, I am with Transact and not Telstra!

I offer this information to show that there is some hope! Windows XP - fully patched, ZoneAlarm Firewall (penultimate version) and Zondex anti-virus. Running on a home network, Modem acting as NAT router (now).

Cheers,

DK

Re: ADSL connectivity problems

Gary, when the failure happens can you see the indicator lights on the modem? Are they (4 of them) showing? When you swapped out the modem did you also swap the plugpack? Is the plugpack well supported in your power board/outlet? Could it be hanging out of the socket and making intermittent connection?

Re: ADSL connectivity problems

Hi guys,

I know these responses are a few months old. I've just moved from Telstra cable to Optus ADSL and I am having the same troubles as Gary. Has anyone found a solution to this?

After a certain time I get the limited connectivity. By turning the modem off and then on again it fixes the problem but I don't want to keep doing that.

Any solutions or suggestions?

Re: ADSL connectivity problems

Hi Dave,

It bore me to tears, but I ended up fixing it when I bought a new PC in January. I have had no problems with it, but I still don't have a fix, as I still have the old P4.
