Drag & Drop file copy failure (1 post)

I have a desktop running 98SE, and another running NT4/SP4. The 98SE machine is the 'main' computer. The NT4 machine is only used for CDROM burning, and this is mainly used for backing up the other machine. The two are networked via a hub using TCP/IP. I copy to the NT4 machine using drag & drop in Explorer, operating at the NT4 machine. This has worked well for several years, although the NT4 machine was 95 until recently.

I've just experienced the following:- copying my Music folder from the 98SE machine, some files were left out but with no error messages. 204 files in source, 151 in copy. The files that were left out can be copied individually. Also if I select all the mp3s in the source folder Music I can drag them to an empty Music folder at the target machine and they all copy. But if I drag the whole folder I get files left out.

I never has this problem when the CD machine was 95 but I didn't have any mp3s then either.

I can find no common elements in the names of the files left out e.g. name length, characters used.

In the course of backing up the 98SE machine 2,600 files were copied and only the mp3s were affected.

I temporarily networked a 98SE laptop to the 98SE desktop and copied the Music folder across with no files left out.

Failure of a drag & drop copy without warning strikes at the heart of many of my windows habits, I'd really like to know what's going on here.

Thanks in anticipation,

Pete M
