Failure to send email with Outlook Express (12 posts)

When I moved to broadband I changed my ISP however I have retained my old ISP account for emails from those who have not updated my new email address.

In using Outlook Express and my new ISP I find that I can successfully receive emails from my old ISP but whenever I wish to reply to any of those emails using my old ISP they get rejected with the message "The connection to the server has failed" - Error 10060.

I also get a similar problem with my laptop (using my current ISP settings) when I connect to the internet through a wireless connection running on someone else's computer, ie I can receive incoming emails but any outgoing emails are rejected.

Can someone shed some light on what setting(s) are needed to overcome the problems outlined?

Thanks

Your dialup ISP will only accept email in the outward direction from a connection established directly with it. When replying to an email received from the old account, just click the dropdown arrow next to the from field and select your broadband email address.

Hi Ernie

Mostly you can have one email address at a time on your computer. You may have to change your email address in Outlook Express. Look at the following: In Tools > Accounts then check the ISP you are using for your emails.

Re: Failure to send email with Outlook Express

Thanks Chris & Graham for your comments.

I accept what is said in relation to my desktop however I'm still left with my laptop problem.

I assume the only way I can process my email when out and about is either thru a dial-up connection to my broadband ISP using the laptop's integrated dial-uo modem or through a web-mail facility offered by my ISP if I wish to connect to the internet via a wireless connection to a friend's ADSL Modem/Router.

Re: Failure to send email with Outlook Express

You are correct. I have until recently used my original dialup on the move and checked the broadband email via webmail. Telstra Bigpond (Aust) however offer a dialup addon to the broadband account which is working well for me now.

Of course if you connect via someone elses account, webmail is the only option, and you can send that way too.

Re: Failure to send email with Outlook Express

Most ISP wont allow you to relay email through their servers. ie: using a different account to send email. This is to stop spammers using their servers.

What I do is to have additional email accounts in outlook express with different settings for the different ISPs I connect through.

In your case create 2 accounts. One called "Broadband" with the settings for your new broadand email account and another called "Old" for your old email address. In this account ensure that the settings for "Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)" are set to your old dial up account details and for "Incoming Mail Server (POP3)" is set to your new broadand mail server, use this account for replying to mail sent to your old address.

LIke wise, when using another's wireless network, have an additional account with the SMTP server set to their ISP's mail server.
