netgear and D-link and wireless installation (5 posts)

My son, having acquired a laptop HP dx8001, decided to link TPG ADSL internet, which we have with the main computer. We bought a NETGEAR wireless home router WGR614 v5, and we are not sure what we have done wrong. The installation worked apparently well; TPG works "OK" on the main installed with XP always upgraded, but no signal, even with the CD. The copy using the jumpdrive installed on the Laptop is coming.

I use a D-LINK ADSL MODEM model DSL-200 Ver:B1 on usb2. Using the Netgear, I installed the blue WLAN cable at the back of the computer. The blue cable light is on, the internet light is on and green, and time to time "blinking". The wireless light is NOT ON...

Could you help?
Thanks.

Re: netgear and D-link and wireless installation

Let me see if I've got this clear.

You've got a cable from the ADSL modem to the USB port on your desktop computer. And a cable from the LAN port on that desktop computer to the wireless router. And a laptop computer with wireless. And with it cabled that way the desktop computer has an internet connection, but the nothing seems to be going through the wireless connection to the laptop computer.

If that's the way you've got it cabled it that's right, the laptop will have no connection to the internet. With it cabled that way you have two separate networks. One wired nertwork from the desktop computer to the internet, and another wireless network between the desktop computer and the laptop computer. The desktop computer is on both networks but there's nothing in it that connects the two networks together so messages can pass from one network to the other and the laptop can see the internet on the other network.

Confirm whether that's the way you've got it wired, then we can go on to sorting it out.

Re: netgear and D-link and wireless installation

To enable the wireless router to work correctly and share the internet connection, it needs a modem connected to the WAN connection. The home computer is then connected by network cable to one of the LAN connections.

If you try to use internet connection sharing from the home computer you will find that the wireless router will conflict with the internet connection sharing.

You could upgrade your modem to one which has an ethernet connection or upgrade the router to a modem router. Upgrading the modem would be the cheaper option.

Re: netgear and D-link and wireless installation

I ran out of time to finish my previous response.

What Stephen John Byrne said in his response is what you should do. Either go get a modem that will connect directly to your wireless router, or exchange your router for one that's got an ADSL modem in it.

Hi, Try this link- it will clear some of the fog from previous responses. http://www.homenethelp.com/ics/ics-install-arch.asp
