Hi, I have an Samsung external hard drive of what I think is 75 Gb. When I plug it in, I get this message- "The specified I/O operation on deviceHarddisk2DR18 was not completed before the time-out period expired." It does appears in "Device Manager" as "Generic USB disk USB device" but plugging it in seems to make the computer unresponsive. If it is plugged in before starting the computer, it hangs at the above message. I seem to have the same problem as the person below describes but I don't know where to find the IDE port or what it looks like. I do have exactly the same case on another external hard drive which is a Hitachi, so could I put the faulty disk in that to test it ? Can I just open the case and take it out and put it in the other case without damaging anything or is it soldered inside the enclosure? I wonder if the problem could be drivers as the Hitachi comes up by name in Device Manager but the faulty one is just called Generic USB Drive. Will it be hard to find the drivers on the Internet as I have had this external hard drive for some time and don't recall it coming with a disk. If changing the enclosure doesn't work, does this mean the data is lost forever? I recall someone saying that you can sometimes get a hard drive to work again temporarily if you put it in the freezer for a while! Sounds strange but I wonder if it might work. Any ideas that are easy to understand and follow would be appreciated. My OS is Windows XP Pro. Thanks-Kerry. PS- What is the best way to store large amounts of Data safely?

Pull the drive from the enclosure and connect to one of the ide ports in your system. This will tell you if the drive has failed OR the enclosure has failed.
