New modem/router problems (4 posts)

I recently bought a new Netgear 4 port ADSL router. On my previous modem I used the USB port for connection, then using ethenet and Internet connection sharing, file sharing from windows on my Desktop computer I was able to network my laptop to get the internet as well. Since the new modem can only use ethenet to connect it to the desktop computer, I have just connected my laptop to one of the 4 ports on the new modem. I have the internet on both my computers through the router but now I have lost file sharing and printer capabilities to my laptop that I had before on the previous setup. Is there anyway I can gain these back for my laptop?

Re: New modem/router problems

Did u use the network setup wizard if u did, do it again instead chosing:

This computer conects directly to the net....

change it to

This computer connects throught another computer or router(residential gateway)

Hopes it works.

Re: New modem/router problems

Hi,

Open a CMD window and ping the desktops IP address. If this works, then check that file and print sharing is turned on and there are no firewalls on.

You didn't say which V of Windows you have- When can you see both computers in Network places and if you try to view files on the desktop machine what error message do you get?

Re: New modem/router problems

I have WinXP. I don't know the IP addresses of any of the computers. When I go to view a file on the desktop computer, it says that the network path was not found. I have not touched the file and printer sharing since. I did try the Network wizard from response one but that did not work either.
