3G black spot (7 posts)

I live in an area which is a 3G black spot. No signal to my mobile or my Telstra wireless USB modem. Is there some sort of booster that could increase the incoming signal? We also can not get ADSL. The downsides to country living.

This might help http://www.wirelesshouse.com.au/p165/3G

I found one more but it specifically said on the website "Not For Use In Australia" If you're not in Oz it's here

Re: 3G black spot

You say there is "no signal" so what do you hope to boost? Not exactly my area of experience but even a weak or wavering signal, if boosted, may be very unreliable. I think Telstra would really be the one to ask but if there is no signal, there is no signal.

Perhaps the downside to country living but perhaps more to do with a Government who can't get their finger out and do something about it. We keep hearing about a national B/B network but where are they at with it today? Still debating it!

Cheers, Paul.

Re: 3G black spot

As I understand it, if you are unable to access the internet by conventional means then you are entitled to satellite access at a subsidised rate. It should not cost you anymore than a normal plan, I am not sure if it is all via Telstra or if the Govt. is involved as well. I would talk to Telstra to begin with.

Yours etc.

Re: 3G black spot

Can you get a signal if you are outside on the porch anywhere? A signal will generally increase if there is nothing in the way.

I have had the same problem, but I am in a city residential area. I have was told 'sorry, but we can not help you'. It's funny, because I can go 500m down the street and I can connect up. Where we are there is a 1km black spot, and we are right in the middle of it.

I was with Vodafone, and they had to let me out of my contract due to no service in the designated area. The only way we could get any reception was to hold the phone over the toilet bowl! Sometimes I felt as if I wanted to just let it go! We went to 3 and they use the Telstra Towers, and we have had no problem since. However, country I just get the next gen, not 3G.

If you are in the country, won't you be eligible for the country rollout they are deploying through Telstra? I have seen a few posts on the net saying to use a USB extention and put it in the highest point of the room near the outside of the building. Sometimes this works.

John.

Re: 3G black spot

Unfortunately there is no easy solutions or a lot you can do. (that I am aware of). You could consider satellite internet, however is rather costly.

If your community is big enough, start a portion and get all the locals to sign and put pressure on your local MP to rally for ADSL in your area.

Otherwise it looks like dial up...

You can try these people, if you have any signal at all they may be able to boost it. They helped me when I was with Virginbroadband.
