Can't Connect To The Net (2 posts)

I recently had problems with other people seeing me on the network. So I uninstalled all the network protocols:

ICS
TCP/IP
IPX/SPX
and all the hardward plugins.

I then went about the task of installing them all back:
dial up adapter
internet connection sharing
Network card drivers
IPX/SPX
TCP/IP
ICS

Now I either can't connect to the internet or if I do I can't recieve any data or send it. It doesn't do anything. So being on the net is useless.... What can I do?

I currently run Windows ME
Network card is a Netgear EA201 with the latest drivers installed.

Your help would be much appreciated...!!!

Re: Can't Connect To The Net

Elliott,

You're not alone. First of all, the order of installing these components is very important. You must have a working network, AND a working internet connection from the host machine before you install the Internet Connection Sharing component in Windows. The procedure is, from scratch:

1. Install network card (Add New Hardware) and drivers on all computers.
2. Add network components (IPX/SPX, TCP/IP, etc) on all computers.
3. Run Home Networking Wizard on the host computer. Say 'yes' to creating a network installation disk for the other computers.
4. Run the (newly created) network installation disk on the other computers.
5. Make sure that the network works between all computers before going any further.
6. Establish an internet connection on the host machine. You may need to use the Internet Connection Wizard if your system has been really screwed.
7. Install Internet Connection Sharing. This should run the Home Networking Wizard and insert all the settings for you. All the previous steps must have been done beforehand, or it will not know what settings to put in place for ICS.

Before the other machines can connect to the internet, they need to have their Internet Connection settings (IE: Tools->Options->Connections tab) set as:
Never Dial a Connection - checked
LAN Connections - all check boxes cleared

Hope this helps, Geoff Farrell.

PS: If you still have trouble, I would be happy to provide details of how I got my WinME/Win98SE network set up and working with the internet.
