Network between Windows & Linux (4 posts)

Hi, I'm wondering is it possible to do a files/internet share network between a Windows 2000 and Red Hat 7.1? If so, can anyone give me some idea what to do?

Also, I have an Athlon 1800+ currently running Windows 2000, I also have an old computer Pentium 166MHz, is it wise to install Linux on my old computer so I can make a network or should I install it to the Athlon with dual boot (W2K and Linux)?

Thanks.

Re: Network between Windows & Linux

I run SME Server (also known as E-Smith) which is a linux server distribution that can also act as a firewall/gateway. I use it only as a file and print server on my network. It's currently running on a P200mmx based computer with 32mb SDRAM. It uses samba (www.samba.org) to permit seemless networking with windows machines on the network. Connection to it from linux machines does not require a full samba installation, just the samba client, which is available in rpm format for RedHat machines and is often installed by default with RedHat 7.x installations.

If you want to simply run one computer with Windows 2000, and another with a flavour of Linux, then you'll want to have samba and samba client installed on the Linux computer to enable communication between the two (samba allows the Windows computer to access shares on the Linux computer, and the samba client allows the linux computer to access shares on the Windows computer).

I'm pretty sure this is all you need. There's plenty of informaiton in news groups (see google groups) and at www.samba.org and www.linuxdoc.org
