ADSL wireless net sharing (5 posts)

Hello. I'm about to move to a home where I can access ADSL and am about to buy a notebook PC with Wireless b & g in-built. I'd like to set the place up so that the internet connection/modem is free-standing, so I can access it via the notebook from anywhere in the house.

We have an old desktop, but it's a noisy Aptiva so I don't want it chugging away just to act as a net share point, so figured I'd stick a wireless net adapter into it too. Is such a modem/router kind of option available to achieve this? Is there an advantage looking for something that includes a hardware firewall too, to avoid the need to use software firewalls?

Thanks for the help.

Alan.

Re: ADSL wireless net sharing

You should have no problem finding any number of products at just about any specialist computer store or department store with a computer section that will do this job.

You'll find products from lower cost manufacturers like Bilion, or from the slightly more expensive mainstreamers like NetComm and D-Link. Other than the price the only real differences are how good a firewall they implement and which wireless standard they support. The cheaper ones will support the slower wireless standard, and the more expensive ones the faster. If all that's going to be sent over the wireless link is the internet data any off them will do the job, and you just need to decide how much you want to spend.

Don't forget to check what deals the ISP provides for hardware. Some offer cheaper than retail prices for particular models. They all off wireless. And if you buy the one they offer from them they can provide better support in setting it up and solving and problems you have.

error trapper

I installed the first rollercoaster tycoon and it works fine but it wont load any of the games Ive saved. It goes back to our main screen with that error trapper message, location unknown. We have a new pentuim 4 with xp. What gives?

Re: ADSL wireless net sharing

Alan,

I had the same problem and solved it buying a DSL wireless access point/router by D-Link, it also includes a firewall and all the wistles you may desire to enhance security, up to #8 pcs can be connected wireless and it also has 4 ethernet ports, more than enough.

In order to print from all stations I added a network print server hardwired to the router and the printer also by D-Link, both came for a reasonable amount of money. In any case there are many different brand you can chose from

Re: ADSL wireless net sharing

Thanks for the responses. I've purchased a Netgear Modem/Router/Firewall via a special offering through Bigpond that made for a pretty good price. Now to see how it performs once received.
