Vista is supposed to be the best ever OS - more stable, more secure etc. I need to buy a fresh computer so I'm a tad concerned about the occasional bad press given to Vista. There have been a few negative stories here on Helpscreen and also from my local computer bits store.
It would be just dandy if I could get some good news about Vista and how wonderful and user friendly it is.

Re: Is Vista OK?
We bought a new Dell with Vista installed and we've been using it for the past four moths with no trouble at all. We've been very happy with it. Runs all the program off our old PC with no issues. So far so good.

Re: Is Vista OK?
Is it OK? Pretty much. It it a pain to find previously easy to locate settings etc? Absolutely. Is it likely that some of your favourite programs and games won't work? Yes. Will it be better after service pack 1? Most likely. Should you buy it with a new PC? Yes, as drivers etc for XP will become an issue with new machines, and Vista can only get better.
So, there is no simple answer to your question. Better is in the eye of the beholder. More gadgets and pretty stuff for sure, but CPU and RAM hungry. You sit at a computer to use a program - Word, Excel, or to play a game, so provided this happens as it should, the OS underneath is largely irrelevant.

Re: Is Vista OK?
"Damning with faint praise" seems to be a fair summary of the previous responses.
There's nothing wrong with Vista. There just doesn't seem to be a lot of improvements considering it has taken 6 years of work by a large organisations's developers, a requires a new aster more power and more expensive PC to run it.

Re: Is Vista OK?
Pennypacker,
If you have a scanner under XP it is MOST LIKELY that it WON'T work under VISTA. The same happened when XP came in and many had to buy a new scanner. There may be other devices in the same boat.
A good idea if you really want Vista, is to have a dual-boot PC with XP as well

Re: Is Vista OK?
My opinion is that the press prefers to print the bad rather than the good. Most that complain about Vista have not taken the trouble to apply patches and so on, or to find them.
Yes, some older applications need updates. I am more than happy with Vista.
