I recently purchaced an Eeepc 701 linux wrongly believing it had a modem built in . I live in a remote town and have no access to broadband , Wi-Fi and have poor mobile coverage (wont work inside house). Telstra Bigpond is our only provider (32bps). My question is about external modems (not internal unless it is easier!) that will connect to LAN port and suport linux? My nearest neighbours are 200 mtrs away so sharing is out. Is there another way to get wireless without USB SIM input. I have average computer skills so detailed solutions would be appreciated !!! I would like to stick with linux but if XP is required then so be it. Any help or advice greatly appreciated.

According to the ASUS spec, it does have an internal modem. Two ports, 1 larger for cat5 network and one smaller phone jack. If the linux was preinstalled, the modem should already be configured.

I understand that you can run a USBmodem under Linux on the Eee or even get an internal modem to work. The Eee has connectors for the modem card and phone line, but the modem card is not fitted.

However other enthusiasts have got it to work with an internal modem.

Thanks for the response re modems . The Eeepc 701 released in australia comes without modem because Telstra would not approve it !! According to ASUS Eeepc Forum (global) this is not uncommon.

There are users with MUCH more internal instalation experience than me that have installed an INTEL modem, Specific wiring and mother boards ?? to the Eee. This would be both risky and void any warrenty. This mod has varying reports of success. I am currently looking into a desktop computer box that will connect to my "slowband" and give me a wireless connection. How this would work with linux i dont know.

Any advice on this setup would be greatfuly recieved. It would seem to be the only solution and maybe the cheapest. I have posted the original question re modems on the Eee forum with 60 hits but no sollutions!!HERES HOPING !

Any old pc with internet sharing on XP, or some linux ditros that let you share, can connect to dial up with an external modem and to a wireless access point via Ethernet.

Some wireless PCI cards can be set to act as an access point under XP, negating the need for a separate one, once you have your access point, your EeePc should connect using whatever security you use, or none if no one is close enough to poach. OR There may be USB to Serial adapters that will let you connect an external modem to your EeePC, Xandros detects external modems quite well.

The easiest and least technical way to do what you want would be to purchase a USB to RS-232 adapter. These are readily available from a number of retailers. MSY (www.msy.com.au) have them for $15

We fell for same two card trick - I am sanguine about it but my partner is quite upset.

The last response I saw on this topic suggested a USB to RS232 adapter. I can report that I have done this, and it worked fine.

Not optimal, but quite ok for home use.

In ciuda tuturor asteptarilor, preturile pe piata imobiliare au scazut in ultimii doi ani foarte mult desi agentii imobiliari ne asigura din 6 in 6 luni ca e pe final criza globala.
