Formatting a partion (3 posts)

Hello all, my main hard drive is divided into two partitions. C partition, which contains the OS, programs and all my data. The other partition D, was used for backups.

I wish to format D partition withour jeopardising C partition. I know how to format D partition using the Disk Management Console found in the Control Panel but I am concerned about endangering C partition. I just need advice about how safe it is to do it this way.

Thanks Cheers John

Re: Formatting a partion

It is completely safe, provided a) the power doesn't go off, b) lightning doesn't strike, c) the drive doesn't fail, d) the cat doesn't trip over the power lead or sit on the keyboard. Get the idea? Back it up first. Best is to image it with a program like Ghost, Drive Snapshot, etc. That way even if the drive dies, you can restore the image to a new unit.

p.s. You don't need to go to Control Panel to do it, just right click the drive letter in My Computer and select Format.

Re: Formatting a partion

Thanks Chris, that's all I need to know. I already knew that you could format from either Win. Explorer or My computer but have never tried it out. It seems to be a dangerous place for a format option though IMHO. I wonder if you need admin. privilege to format from there?

Cheers John.
