2 pc to 1 monitor (5 posts)

hello, I understand to do this I need a KVM with audio. Is there one connection I could get to do both 2 pc to 1 monitor and internet? Or do I need to buy both a wireless router and a KVM?

I want to hook both of my computers to one monitor and have internet on both

Re: 2 pc to 1 monitor

A KVM only allows sharing of a K (keyboard), V (video display) and M (mouse), plus, these days, audio. So I guess they ought now be called KVMAs. It doesn't share an internet connection between two PCs. Yes, you'll have to get a router to do that.

Running XP? You can use remote desktop to control one from the other, no equipment needed. If they aren't currently networked, you will have to organize that. Do you have a broadband modem? Need more details before advising on the best course. Please explain your setup in detail.

Re: 2 pc to 1 monitor

Hi thank you for your response, I have Windows XP on this one, my new one is arriving shortly it will have vista. I hear this may complicate things.

I use a Motorola surfboard modem # SBV5120 I was also told to link them through a hub, but my reason for getting a new one is this one is infected and all the antivirus programs I have tried are not quite helping. I don't want to get rid of this one, because I would like to use it for my dirty work and keep my new pc clean any advise is greatly appreciated Thanx

Re: 2 pc to 1 monitor

To run the machines separately, just plug one into the USB port and the other into the ethernet port of the modem. To share files and to control one with the other, you will need a small hub. Vista and XP can remote to each other once you set the appropriate permissions, workgroups etc. It would be perhaps a good idea to find someone nearby to assist you, but if that isn't an option, then we should be able get it going. Not sure that I would have bought a new machine to resolve a virus issue though, a clean install would do it at no cost. You should do this anyway, as once you network the two machines it will only be a matter of time before the new one has the same problem unless you take the first option of keeping them completely separate. In this case of course, you will also need the kvm if you want to run with one set of controls.
