A couple of months ago I upgraded from 98se to Win2k (I loathe XP - more wizards than LOTR) and like its stability and features.
Being a great believer in the dictum 'if it aint broke dont fix it', I was happy to do without SPs, until I tried to install Office 2003, for which one of them is required.
SP1 installed OK, and SP2, then SP3 'could not continue'. I left it a couple of weeks and discovered SP4, which I have now attempted - twice - to install, without success. Yes, I do all the requisite things, like closing down PC-Cillin, Getright, etc, and rebooting often.
Although I was pretty knowledgeable about 98, I am still a rank beginner with 2k, and would really appreciate any help. I have a Gigabyte mobo with an Athlon XP 1600 and 512MB RAM.
The error messages I get when trying to install SP4 are 3 (title in the header bar of the error box, followed by the message):
- sp4iis: Unable to connect to metabase.
- sp4iis: Setup failed to remove ism.dll script mappings. SP Setup will abort.
- SP4 Setup Error: An error in updating your system has occurred (aren't Microsoft helpful?). Windows 2000 has been partially updated and may not work properly. It's recommended that you use your repair disk to repair your system. Insert the W2k Boot disk and select the Emergency Repair option.
When I follow their suggestion, a message appears telling me I have a missing file. I boot from the CD, repair Windows, and all is hunky-dory. Until I try to update again.
Any suggestions gratefully received - and tried.
