Internet connection sharing (6 posts)

Hi there,

I have 3 computers (2 running Windows XP and one with Windows 98) connected in a star network by Dlink DI-704P (Cable/ Broadband Router with print server). Each computer can see each other, share my document folder and print to the printer.

Only one computer in the network has access to internet (dial up) but it can’t be shared! I have tried all methods that I know of but I still couldn’t get the other 2 computers to access to the internet via the one computer with 56k modem attached to it.

I still resist joining the broadband bandwagon, because I don’t use internet often and I like to learn about networking!

Your valuable assistance to this matter is highly appreciated.

Thank you.

Re: Internet connection sharing

Have you gone to Help on one of your computers running XP and typed in "internet connection sharing" to learn how to set up Microsoft's ICS software on the one connected to the internet, and the others as clients?

Re: Internet connection sharing

If you have tried ICS and that hasn't resolved the issue, I would say that perhaps the Dlink DI-704P firewall is blocking the access.

Further to your comment, "I still resist joining the broadband bandwagon, because I don’t use internet often and I like to learn about networking!"

Broadband is far from still being a "bandwagon" anymore and you can get accounts that are comparable in price to dial up but far from comparable in terms of speed! I am sure you will use the 'net more when you experience the speed. As for your desire to learn about networking, what better access to resources is there than the Internet!?!? Also, the InterNET is one BIG network, what better classroom than that?

Re: Internet connection sharing

ICS requires that the PC with the Internet connection MUST be IP address 192.168.0.1.

Is it possible that the router has allocated a different address with DHCP. If so you will need to turn DHCP off on the router and manually give each PC an address in the 192.168.0 subnet, with the Internet PC 192.168.0.1

Re: Internet connection sharing

Not sure... but is it something to do with "Bridging" connections? Try this: Open network configurations on the PC that has dial up, Select both the Dial Up conn. and LAN, right-click and slect Bridge. What happens? This may only be on xp

Re: Internet connection sharing

My suggestions are these.

1. Connect to the internet with the XP machine, does it have XP Pro? When setting this connection (either via wizard or longhand) there should be a check box where you allow the internet connection to be shared. Say YES and check the box.

2. Allocate IP addresses to ALL your machines. I disagree that it must be 192.168.0.1. I have found it more reliable to do this rather than allowing the Internet connected machine to do this. If you allocate IP addresses then you KNOW they are all the time. Make sure your firewall knows your subnet is trusted.

3. Other machines (particularly the Win98 machine) are configured so that you can connect to the internet via a LAN and need to be told that IP address of the HOST machine, see 2.

4. Test your connections, file sharing, pinging etc between machines. Connect to the internet and test this too!

That, in a nutshell is how it could work and does work for me. Your experience may differ.

Good luck
Trevor.

PS. Remember to tell your firewall the address of your trusted subnet (home network).
