Converting LP's to CD (5 posts)

I have been trying to convert my LP's to CD over the last few months using Audacity which I obtained some time ago from your magazine DVD.

Unfortunately every CD I make plays back in mono rather than stereo. When I am recording both channel windows are populating but on close inspection it is exactly the same information on both channels.

I have played the CD's I have made through my surround sound system and whilst the volume is fine the music only comes out of the middle channel wheras a store bought CD will have music coming out of two speakers. I have also tried copying to different brands of CD and get the same result each time.

When this first started happening I also tried another "free" LP to CD burning programme (can't remember the name and have deleted it from my system) with exactly the same result.

My burning system on the computer is NERO (not sure which version) and my operating system is XP. (I am using my old turntable and amplifier both of which are approximately 25 years old.)

Any advice would be appreciated

Make sure the cable from amplifier to computer input port is stereo (some are mono)

Re: Converting LP's to CD

Bruce,

It HAS to be a setting in Audacity or the sound card settings. All other software is only used for storage and burning whatever signal you have recorded. Of course it could also be a fault in your lead from your amplifier to your sound card where you may have a short- especially if it started happening suddenly.

I've bought more LPs in the past 12 months than in the last 12 years and burnt them all successfully.

Hope this gives you some avenues to explore further?

Re: Converting LP's to CD

Thanks for the suggestions. The problem has happened since day one. I have checked the settings in both once I realised there was a problem and everything seems fine. The lead was brand new and purchased specifically for this purpose.

Re: Converting LP's to CD

Bruce,

New leads CAN be faulty?? I still believe that the problem lies between your turntable and your PC. Try listening to the record through earphones while it's playing to ensure it's a stereo signal. Another trick is to turn on your PC speakers to also check for stereo signal.

Nero only burns the recorded signal.

Do your recording programs provide a visual display on your PC of the signal? If they do, it's a simple matter of viewing to determine if you're getting a stereo signal.
