AMD Sempron (6 posts)

I am interested in the Sempron because of its inexpensive price.

I am thinking of using it for Microsoft Office mainly and playing media.

But can it play games like Unreal Tournament 2004? I have heard that it is equivalent to a Intel Celeron and wanted to know if you could use it also for occasional gaming.

Thanks, Andrew.

Re: AMD Sempron

AMD Semprons are "value" processors. You get value for money. They happily run internet and office type applications. They would certainly run games, but they are not going to run them anywhere near as quickly as a high-cost "performance" processor.

You get what you pay for. Semprons are what you buy when you can't afford or don't need a lot.

Remember this too. The less you spend now the sooner you'll decide its too slow and have to go buy something faster. A processor that's only good enough for today may not be a good long term purchase.

Re: AMD Sempron

It's a great [inexpensive] chip for gaming.

Outdoes the Celeron totally in that arena.

Merry Christmas!

Re: AMD Sempron

My recollections on the subject are that the Sempron is what the Athlon XP was before the Athlon range went upmarket as 64 bit processors. It should be the equivalent of a P4 of the same rated speed ie Sempron 2.6 should have similar performance to a P4 2.6 Ghz processor.

Cheers

Carl
