I used AVG Antivirus very happily for more than a year, then deleted what I thought were unnecessary Temp files from WindowsTemp.

However, after that the email scan would not work, the message saying it was looking for a file in Windowstemp which I could no longer find to restore. Twice I deleted AVG and all its bits and pieces and downloaded it again, but each time the same message came up that the email scanner was not active and nothing I did would make it active.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Stuart Re install the program form start again. After you uninstall it from add/remove programs.

I am pretty sure that the antivirus company has a tool for this. It's definitely worth taking a look for. They also have a really good Conficker removal tool that I can vouch for.
