We are trying to hook two computers together through a two-wire modem. The first computer which is hooked to the physical modem works just fine. The second computer, however, will not connect. The lights indicate that it should be connected, but it isn't. We called our ISP and asked for help. They said that the problem was that the IP on the second computer wasn't renewing. We viewed your article on forcing IPs, but donot know how to do so. Once we know how to force the IP, we will try and see if that fixes our problem.
Also, what does pinging the IPs mean, and how do you do that?
Thank you.

Re: Forcing IP?
What cable do you have? In networking like devices need a crossover cable (with respect for the latest routers/switches/access points which can be self detecting)
Thus to connect two computers you need a crossover cable.
To connect two switches a crossover cable.
A computer to a switch a straight through cable.
The convention now losing favour was that crossover were red sheaved, straight through were blue. If you are unsure take your cable to a retailer who can use a cable tester, alternatively buy a crossover plug about A$5.00 and see what happens.

Re: Forcing IP?
Hi Earl,
As per your information you are using a 2 wire modem. Also you said that the modem that you are using is a 2wire modem.
It would really help if you could tell me the model number of the 2 wire modem.
You said that the computer that is physically connected to the computer works fine but the one that is not physically connected.
Is it connected thru wireless?
If it is then was is th OS in the computer. Need to know in order to give you the troubleshooting steps.
The wireless configuration with a 2 wire is totally different where you need to put in the WEP key.
Please let me know.
Because other than ethernet connection you can connect computers to the 2 wire using USB, wireless and HPNA [Home phone network adapter].
Thanks
Kash
