I'm trying to set up a simple connection between two computers, one running WinXP and the other ME. Even with the ethernet cable between the computers it says on the computer running XP that a network cable is unplugged. Is it because these 2 versions of windows are incompatible (which i doubt), or is there something wrong with the cable (CAT5).
Thanx

Re: Windows XP and ME
If you are connecting them directly - ie, NOT through an ethernet hub - you need to use a crossover cable. Any computer store selling cat 5 cables will be able to sell you one.

Hi Scott,
Short of buying a cable tester, or making sure that the RJ45 jackets at either end are correctly wired (crossover), I suggest that you make sure that both have got static IP ddresses (at least for this exercise) and ping (start-run) the IP address of one from the other. A "fleeting" dialog box will come up and tell you if they can connect.

There is something wrong - it is the wrong cable. For direct connect you must use a Cat5 crossover cable. Available from the local PC shop for a few dollars. The network cable you are using is for a connection to a network hub. The required crossover is done there.

Depending on what type of network cards you are using, you may need a crossover network cable. If you're using a standard straight-through cable it may not work.
I would suggest try a crossover cable first.
