Red Alert 2 Freeze (3 posts)

I am running Windows Me on an Athlon 1Ghz 30GB 128RAM with Nvidia Graphics and Soundblaster Live Sound Card. I have had this system for four weeks from day one there have been nothing but problems with it freezing on this game.

The freeze can occur at any time randomly from ten mins to five hours of playing. The system locks and the only option is to turn off the power to restart.

Things I have done : System Diag. on Manufacturers advice, complete system recovery. Nothing else running only Red Alert 2 installed.

Disk Defrag Drivers updated for Sound Card & Video Card.

We have tried every recommendation from manufacturers and Tech advice (Game) to solve the problem, but it still exists.

Any Ideas ?

Re: Red Alert 2 Freeze

It could be a 'fan' problem - ie one of the fans in your computer case is not running properlly.

It could be a memory leak or even a program running in the background that is disturbing the game (you can check this out by pressing CTRL + ALT + DEL to see what program is running - the only thing that should be there is iexplore and systray)

Re: Red Alert 2 Freeze

It could be..

1. Power Supply. Athlons use a lot of power and require a constant power feed. They need it most running highly CPU intensive games. Make sure your power supply is 350 Watts (400 is better).

2. Heat. Athlons run HOT. Make sure you are using a good CPU fan and the best heat transfer paste (Artic Silver). Dont skimp here. The chip is way more expensive than the Fan. It should run under 50 degrees C for best stability. Put a thermometer in your case. It should be under 35 degrees C after 15 minutes.

3. Make sure that you have sufficient space on your hard disk for the windows page/swap file. There should be at least 1GB available.

Probably not the cause, but download the latest DirectX drivers from www.microsoft.com/directx.

Hope this helps.
