I have had a satellite modem installed recently and have tried to use internet connection sharing as I have two computers networked. I have followed the instructions as to how to configure the host as well as the client but find that the client simply does not connect.
I have created a new connection but this now brings up the usual dialup connect window, which does not work.
Any ideas as to what I am doing wrong?

Re: Satellite modem
Hello Andy: I dont know anything about this yet as I am about to do the same thing with my two pc's.
But here is a tip I picked up but I dont know if it helps you or not, but have a look anyway and let me know, ok?
The Host computer needs to be fitted with 2 network cards (also called ethernet cards). The Client computer needs 1 network card .
Connect the Host computer directly to your modem from one of the network cards using the cable supplied with your modem
Connect the other network card in your Host computer to the network card in the Client computer using a CATEGORY 5 CROSSOVER cable with RJ-45 connectors on each end.
Only two computers can be connected by this method
HOST COMPUTER (the one that connects directly to the internet) .
Click START / CONTROL PANEL
Click NETWORK AND INTERNET CONNECTIONS
Click NETWORK CONNECTIONS
Right click on LOCAL AREA CONNECTION 2 icon under the LAN or HIGH SPEED INTERNET title
-(not the icon under INTERNET GATEWAY title)-
Click on PROPERTIES
Highlight INTERNET PROTOCOL(TCP/IP) in the list
Click PROPERTIES
Click USE THE FOLLOWING IP ADDRESS radio button
Enter the following details:
IP ADDRESS = 192.168.0.1
SUBNET MASK = 255.255.255.0
DEFAULT GATEWAY = 192.168.0.1
Click OK button
Click START / CONTROL PANEL
Click NETWORK AND INTERNET CONNECTIONS
Click NETWORK CONNECTIONS

Click OK button
Click START / CONTROL PANEL
Click on PERFORMANCE AND MAINTENANCE
Click on SYSTEM
Click on COMPUTER NAME tab

Enter a WORKGROUP name (this can be any name you choose)
Click OK button
Click START / CONTROL PANEL
Click NETWORK AND INTERNET CONNECTIONS
Click INTERNET OPTIONS
Click CONNECTIONS tab
Click LAN SETTINGS button
UNTICK ALL BOXES
CLIENT COMPUTER (connects to the HOST computer)
Click START / CONTROL PANEL
Click NETWORK AND INTERNET CONNECTIONS
Click NETWORK CONNECTIONS
Right click on LOCAL AREA CONNECTION icon
Click on PROPERTIES
Highlight INTERNET PROTOCOL(TCP/IP) in the list
Click PROPERTIES
Click USE THE FOLLOWING IP ADDRESS radio button

Re: Satellite modem
Thanks for that Tom. I have only just read your advice and have not had time to test it but will do as soon as I can. Have considered buying a switch, but am no sure that will work. In a way it would be better so that I don't have to have both computers on at the same time.
In any case will let you know what happens.

Re: Satellite modem
Dear Tom
Have tried your suggestions but had no success. There was one difference at one stage of your instruction it says "Right clcik on local area connection icon (under Internet Gateway title)" in my case there is no Internet Gateway title. Maybe that is why I was unsuccessful.
Having completed the instructions to the best of my ability I could not access the internet at all, so I reversed all.
I now have 3 options a) use a switch. b) use a router, c) make up my own switchbox using relays.
First I will try the comercial switch as it seems the cheapest option.
I still think you are on the right track and I am doing it wrong.
Thanks for your help and I hope you have better luck than I did.

Re: Satellite modem
Dear To
I have bought a switch for $24 and it seems to have solved my problem, although I can only use the internet or the local network at the time i.e. to access the network I have to switch off the modem. I am not sure yet but the switch may have slowed down my connection to the net. With this satellite modem I often get less than perfect service.

Re: Satellite modem
Andy
You probably need a router. Routers are designed to connect two networks together, in your case the "network" with the satellite modem and the network with your PCs. Depending on exactly how your satellite works this could be very easy.
If all your logon etc is done via the modem then a router designed for a cable DSL connection will work. You connect the modem to the WAN port of the router. The router stores the username and password and logs on for you. Once the internet connection is made this network is available to all PCs connected on the LAN side of the router (usually 4 ports but you ca have 4 ports + wireless).
Each PC operates autonomously sending a request for files (pages) etc to the router which redirects them through the modem. Thus, once Internet connection is established by the router you only need to turn on the PC you plan to use.
The router is always connected to the Internet. As a bonus you get a hardware firewall which makes your PCs invisible to the outside world.
