Just an answer (4 posts)

I aked the question regarding homepna and would like to thank Gordon & Chris for their response. I thought after I posted that Telstra would be at the bottom of availability!

Will have to go for wireless until we grow up!

Cheers, Hal Grist

Re: Just an answer

Sorry to burst your bubble but it's nothing to do with Telstra. Back in the dark days when Telstra was a monopoly they regulated what could and couldn't be connected to the Australian telphone network.

Since deregulation that resposibilty has fallen to Austel and later the Australian Communications Authority (ACA). The ACA now decides what can be connected to the telephone network based on such criteria as electrical safety (will it put dangerous voltages out on the telephone network and fry people working on the lines), and if it will interfere or not with the telephone network (induce noise into the network for example).

So if the equipment is not sold in Australia it is generally for a good reason. If you buy equipment from computer markets, make sure it has Austel or ACA approval, so ou know it will do what it is designed for with out disadvantaging other telephone users.

Re: Just an answer

Just to add a bit - high speed broadband trials over the power lines are underway in Hobart. Likely to be the next big thing. Just plug the modem into the powerpoint, and away you go.

Thank you all for your response and comments, Interesting about Power line Broad Band in Tassy. The Western Power in WA went down that road some years back but suspect the WA Gov at the time canned it due to costs. Again thank you for your input I will go wireless!
