I'm not sure but I think raw depends on what camera you're using. I have a Fuji that will take shots in raw and it comes with its own software.
This is from filext.com:
A RAW file is typically a recording of the direct output from a CCD in a digital camera. While some RAW files have the RAW file extension, most often a camera maker will give their RAW files different extensions and usually their own specific format. For example, Fuji uses .RAF, Canon uses either .CRW or .CR2, Kodak uses .KDC, Minolta uses .MRW, Nikon uses .NEF, Olympus uses .ORF, Adobe uses .DNG, Pentax uses .PTX or .PEF, Sony uses .ARW, and Sigma uses .X3F
