Engin VoIP (14 posts)

Has anyone used the Engin VoIP product ?

If yes what have your the experiences with it been like and were there any problems encountered ?

What is the minimum internet speed and minimum downloads required for it to run successfully for quality of voice etc?

Is it better to plug it in to a switch RJ45 port or straight into the USB port of say an adsl router ?

Is it still an economical way to go considering with an ADSL service that you still have to pay exchange line rental ?

Or if available I suppose cable is the way to go ?

Do you receive a real national number from Engin to allow receiving of calls as well as making them ?

Re: Engin VoIP

I don't use Engin, I use Skype. Similar outcome, though Skype is free to have and Engin attracts a monthly fee. Presumably the call costs are lower though. With Skype calls PC to PC are entirely free worldwide. PC to a real phone is much cheaper than phone to phone. If you want people to be able to ring you from a real phone you must purchase a number for incoming calls. I can't see the point of this as you must (as you pointed out) retain an exchange line which already has a number. The faster the connection the better the quality of the call, so a network connection will typically outperform USB. I have reduced my average $200 per quarter phone bill (calls only) to $50 plus around $30 in Skype charges - so a saving of better than 50% in call costs.

Re: Engin VoIP

We use 2 engin VoIP voice lines + 1 engin VoIP fax line & find engin to be great.

I tried Skype Out (Skype's pay phone service) some time ago but engin's quality was better then (don't know about now). Also, engin gives you one (or more) 'normal' phone number(s) to receieve incoming calls from anywhere (also free calls engin-to-engin) & you can use a 'normal' phone handset which is independent of your computer, whereas with Skype, you need your computer switched on.

I am not sure about the RJ45 switch, but we plug it in to an ADSL router. I have a friend using his on cable & therefore does not need to rent a line & he's over the moon. (We cannot get cable here). It costs (I think) $9.90 per month (first month free & full refund on the hardware within the first month if it doesn't suit you).

I travel overseas a bit & always take the adaptor with me - it's about the size of a fat wallet - & plug it in to any broadband & make calls as if I were making them from home - the calls are charged as if you are at home too - so for instance, it is cheaper for me to call from within China to another destination within China using engin plugged into a hotel broadband connection (for example), because distance calls within China are moderately expensive.

engin's rate is 3.5 cents per minute. Also, if you make calls using your engin adaptor from anywhere on the globe to any Australian landline, the call cost is 10 cents. I call people in Australia from Western China (near Tibet) & they have no idea of my location & it only costs me 10 cents for unlimited time. To most major countries the cost is 3.5 cents per minute from wherever you call (using the engin adaptor). There are also various plans with engin where you can get 20 cent untimed calls to many countries.

The minimum speed that I have used was in China at 100 kb/sec (which is not much above dial-up speed in Australia). I did not notice any breaks or dropouts.

We have saved a lot of money on our communications bills through engin & the quality is positively business quality. Plus you get all the bells & whistles for free that the 'regular' phone companies charge you for - like caller ID & much more. We don't use our PSTN line at all for outgoing calls anymore.

Re: Engin VoIP

I have used Engin VOIP for the last few months and found it very satisfactory. Have a look at their website - it covers the various options. I use a Voicebox 2 which works well. They are cheap at the moment. A Voicebox 3 may be a better choice if you are starting from scratch. Setup is dead simple. In either case you can plug in a normal telephone and the computer doesn't need to be on to make or receive calls.

Basic cost is $10 per month and this includes (for most locations) a national telephone number. It is recommended to keep a PSTN telephone line because you lose VOIP along with internet if the power fails, so you need a standard line for emergency use. The line provides your ADSL. Get the lowest available line rental cost. Call cost is higher, but you won't be making many calls on the PSTN line. The ADSL router (or Voicebox 3) provides RJ45 connection which is always better than USB.

Download speed is not too important. ADSL upload speed is low and may affect quality. Higher is better.

Be careful of Telstra and Optus as ISPs. Their standard hardware causes trouble with VOIP. It's not hard to guess why.

For me, Engin works out cheaper than Skype. It might be different for you. There are also many other providers - have a look at www.whirlpool.net.au for discussions on call quality and costs. This is an excellent site for all matters broadband. You will see there are many different choices and each has its enthusiasts.

In the final analysis there isn't much difference in VOIP costs between the various providers. Engin may not be the cheapest but probably has better quality and service than many others. Anyway I'm happy and won't be changing!

engin voip

would the engin adaptor work in France ?

I have tried Engin VOIP. When it works it is great. The problem is that Engin VOIP as a provider is poor. Their technical section is poor. I have lost count of how many times my number has been disconnected due to technical issue's on their end. Engin can't get requests right. It has been over 2 weeks since ordering a buisness phone solution from them. When the hardware is delivered, it is wrong or not what we ordered. If you are running a business I would not recommend Engin as a service provider. I do however recommend VOIP as a good cost effective phone alternative to the old pstn. Engin needs to seriously work on their internal systems. Very poor provider.

I have used engin for quite some time but the VOIP line via a voice box every few months locks up not allowing phone line or internet; it does eventually come good & not much help from provider, no real solution

Please, I do not know where this can be done, except for the forum, and so I ask all! Please contact me at my e-mail, if you are willing to help me! I implore you! I have no other choice. expresslaons@gmail.com

so ask me
